In Search of the Uncanny Valley
نویسنده
چکیده
Recent advances in computer animation and robotics have lead to greater and greater realism of human appearance to be obtained both on screen and in physical devices. A particular issue that has arisen in this pursuit is whether increases in realism necessarily lead to increases in acceptance. The concept of the uncanny valley suggests that high, though not perfect, levels of realism will result in poor acceptance. We review this concept and its psychological basis.

In Search of the Uncanny Valley by
Introduction The topic of devices that mimic human form and function is not a new one. However, recent advances in computer animation and robotics have lead to greater and greater realism to be obtained both on screen and in physical devices. A particular issue that has arisen in this pursuit is whether increases in realism necessarily lead to increases in acceptance. This essay reviews the con...
متن کاملThe Uncanny Valley: does it exist?
The ‘Uncanny Valley’ refers to a sense of unease and discomfort when people look at increasingly realistic virtual humans. Despite growing academic interest in the Uncanny Valley our understanding is limited and there has been little rigorous questioning to determine if the phenomenon actually exists. The Uncanny Valley questions widely held assumptions about the correlation between realism and...
متن کاملIndividual differences predict sensitivity to the uncanny valley
It can be creepy to notice that something human-looking is not real. But can sensitivity to this phenomenon, known as the uncanny valley, be predicted from superficially unrelated traits? Based on results from at least 489 participants, this study examines the relation between nine theoretically motivated trait indices and uncanny valley sensitivity, operationalized as increased eerie ratings a...
متن کاملA review of empirical evidence on different uncanny valley hypotheses: support for perceptual mismatch as one road to the valley of eeriness
The uncanny valley hypothesis, proposed already in the 1970s, suggests that almost but not fully humanlike artificial characters will trigger a profound sense of unease. This hypothesis has become widely acknowledged both in the popular media and scientific research. Surprisingly, empirical evidence for the hypothesis has remained inconsistent. In the present article, we reinterpret the origina...
متن کاملThe Uncanny Valley: Effect of Realism on the Impression of Artificial Human Faces
Roboticists believe that people will have an unpleasant impression of a humanoid robot that has an almost, but not perfectly, realistic human appearance. This is called the uncanny valley, and is not limited to robots, but is also applicable to any type of human-like object, such as dolls, masks, facial caricatures, avatars in virtual reality, and characters in computer graphics movies. The pre...
